You are right about how tools like Facebook and Twitter actually work. It bothers me when people say things like "Twitter sparked the revolution in Egypt." That is silly. The people who happened to be socializing with aid from tools like Twitter sparked the revolution. It was the people protesting in the streets, not people in the West tweeting about Egypt.

I avoid reality TV for this very reason. There is nothing to gain from it.

An interesting comparison to make. The first thing that comes to mind when I hear Hobo Soup is a single person gathering the bits of actually useful code he can find, and combining it into a single entity. You go the other way, saying that each contributor adds a bit to the soup. I think both approaches yield interesting thought.

Your analogy naturally begs the question: What does maturity mean for the Internet? What is the last stage of the life cycle? Will the relative goodwill of the early years ever come back, or will maturation of the Net mark its complete extinction?

I really like your network analogy. (Although, I hope networks don't develop alzheimer's when they get old.) Even with technology in general, devices get old and seem too slow when new generations of technology come of age.

Very interesting perspective. Most social media started as just a way to communicate but has taken a dramatic step towards organizing the masses. Most people aren't terribly worried about posting a comment on their facebook or twitter about their personal opinion. As they discover that dozens or maybe even hundreds of people agree with them, a group is formed. The larger the group, the more power and resources that are collected.

I agree that closed architectures will eventually lead to problems, but at this point, Apple has a strong hold on this market. In the long run, Apple's golden hand will probably be more than enough to keep a hold on that market, even with all of its competitors. Well, at least until Steve Jobs is gone, that is.

Here is what Google will do:

1) Convert all of YouTube to their new VP8 codec.
2) Tweak Googlebot to favor webpages that use the VP8 codec, and disadvantage the sites who use the H.264 codec.

There are other things that Google can do, al of which seem reminiscent of when God smote the Israelites in the wilderness: this will not end in a orderly fashion. There will be casualties.
